organic cotton crib beddingExpectant parents purchasing bedding for their new baby need to know what will be safe and comfortable and not result in itchy rashes.

Baby needs a lot of tender loving care.   Newborn baby skin is delicate and extremely prone to rashes, so care must be taken to pick out fabrics that are soft and not abrasive to baby’s skin.  When picking your baby’s bedding, safety should be the most important thing to consider.   It must be remembered that just because a product is 100% cotton doesn’t necessarily mean it is safe.

Cotton that is commercially grown contains allergens and chemicals. It is better to choose organic baby bedding and clothing because of how vunerable baby’s skin is to infections and rashes. Of course, this bedding does cost more, but that additional cost is small when compared to the reduced likelihood of future health problems for your baby.

organic cotton baby beddingShopping on the Internet is quite amazing.  You can find out about all sorts of essential things and why you should be considering them, like organic cotton baby bedding.   Once you start thinking about how baby’s skin comes into direct contact with the bedding and all the chemicals they process  cotton and polyester  with,  it makes sense to investigate natural, organic cotton for your little one.

Do you realize that babies not only absorb the toxins through the skin but inhale them as they sleep?  It’s very worthwhile considering the detergent you use, also, as the store brands all leave a residue in the fabric which will be inhaled and absorbed.

Producing Safe Organic Cotton

The process of producing organic cotton begins in India with hand-picked cotton, free of chemicals and pesticides. This prevents your baby from developing skin and other allergies, while at the same time protects the workers and the environment.  Right after the harvest, the cotton is spun and manufactured mechanically free of any chemicals. This reduces the shrinkage to 4% and leaves the garments feeling softer on your infant’s skin.

All of the organic cotton baby products are then sewn from this cotton,  grown and processed to the highest standards.  So strictly followed are the guidelines that commercial cotton cannot be stored in the same building – shipments of commercial cotton cannot share the same containers so cross contamination won’t occur.  You, the consumer, purchase soft, durable, chemical-free garments that are safe for your child, while at the same time you are helping protect our environment.

Special Child Pillows

child pillowsI’ve found these child’s pillows that are safe and just right ot fit side by side on twin bed for those snuggly siblings.  They measure 14″ x 20″ and so are easy to carry around and fully washable -  just the right size for a child to feel like they have their very own pillow – not one of moms and dads.

There is the new shredded natural rubber pillow.   It is comfortable and easy to care for, in child size – 14 x 20″ – and the best part is you can wash it if it gets ucky or stinky.

There is also the lightly filled one with wool and organic cotton outer.  These are light fill because most children don’t need pillows – they just think as they grow up, they should have one.

organic cotton baby toyHere is a wonderful alternative to plastic baby toys,  you know,  the ones that are made with toxic chemicals.  Baby chews on them and ingests all sorts of harmful substances.

These baby toys are made of 100% organic cotton with no additives.  They love to cuddle the soft, cosy dolls.  You can even soak them in water and put them in the freezer to pull out when baby is cutting teeth.  The cold cloth will be very soothing on their gums.

organic cotton baby bootiesThese boots weren’t made for walking – just to keep tiny feet warm and cosy. Baby booties are made with the knowledge that parents want the booties to stay on.  So we’ve found these  booties with a great rib knit cuff at the ankle that keeps them on.

There are Two Tone booties, also, that have a  smaller cuff but since babies try to take them off by grabbing the front, these also stay put.  There seems to be a wonderful variety of colors and pattens that will match all sorts of clothing.  The boots are made from 100% organic cotton so won’t disturb the most delicate skin.

Organic Cotton Baby Tees

Organic Cotton Baby Short-sleeved TeeDuring the warm, summer months, a short sleeve cotton baby Tee can help keep baby cool.  While keeping the baby cool, the Tee also helps protect baby from the sun.

For cooler days, you can find long sleeve cotton Tee’s for your baby.  I would recommend using the long sleeve if your baby will be out in the sun for over a few minutes.  The long sleeves on a cotton tee will help protect the baby’s arms from sunburn without being overly heavy.

When purchasing clothing, it is always best to go with organic cotton baby clothing to keep your baby away from harmful chemicals used in regular fabrics.  Formaldehyde is commonly used in cotton, but can stay in the fabric even after many washings.  Formaldehyde is suspected of causing SIDS.
